What he took at the top

An 84-year-old man passed me on the Diamond Head stairs every morning. On day 9 I saw what he took at the top.

I was 64 and winded by step 40. He was 84 and barely breathing hard.

Mr. Okada, 84, climbing the Diamond Head stairs at sunrise while Gary, 64, grips the handrail below him, out of breathDiamond Head trail, 6:20 a.m.

Step 40 of 99. That's where my legs went hollow.

My grandson Tyler was already at the top, waving. I was holding the rail with both hands and pretending to enjoy the view.

Then a small old man in a red cap went past me. Not fast. Steady. He nodded and said “Morning” like we were passing in the cereal aisle.

He was 84. I found that out later. That morning I only knew he was older than my father ever got.

The old men who owned those stairs

My wife Linda and I spent last winter in Honolulu, near our daughter. I promised Tyler we'd climb Diamond Head together every morning before school.

Every morning at six, the same group of older men was already on the trail. Mr. Okada and three friends, all past 75, all in windbreakers, all talking the whole way up.

Talking. On the 99 steps. I couldn't have said my own name on those steps.

At the top they stood around the old bunker like it was a parking lot. No red faces. No hands on knees. On Sundays Mr. Okada did it twice.

On day 6, my grandson had to come back for me

I sat down on a rock halfway up and couldn't make myself stand. Tyler came back down two steps and held out his water bottle. “Grandpa, are you okay?”

Twelve years old, and he was looking at me the way I used to look at my dad.

It wasn't only the stairs. My hands were cold every night, and Linda had stopped letting me put my feet on her side of the bed. By dinner my ankles had deep red sock lines. I fell asleep in the recliner at 3 p.m. most days. And my doctor had started watching my blood pressure a little closer at every checkup.

I had tried the usual things:

Fish oil softgels spilled from a plain bottle
Fish oil, 2 yearsFishy burps, same stairs
Crushed raw garlic on a cutting board with honey
Raw garlic + honeyBurned my stomach, cleared the room
Swollen ankles with deep sock lines
Compression socksOnly worked while I wore them
Gary asleep in a recliner in the afternoon
Energy drinks at 3 p.m.Jittery, then asleep anyway

Mr. Okada was 20 years older than me. Whatever he was doing, it wasn't in my kitchen.

Day 9, at the bunker wall

On day 9 I made it to the top right behind him. He sat on the bunker wall, took a small silver tin out of his windbreaker, and shook two amber softgels into his palm.

“Vitamins?” I asked.

“Garlic.”

I laughed. I'd been choking down raw garlic for a month. He looked at my red face and said, “Not that garlic.”

Then he invited me to his house that afternoon to show me what he meant.

The cupboard on his lanai

Mr. Okada showing Gary a dark cupboard of glass jars with garlic aging from white to golden to dark brown
His mother's jars, 20 months from left to right. Illustration.

He opened a dark wooden cupboard. Rows of glass jars, the garlic inside going from white on the left to gold to almost black on the right.

“Fresh garlic is angry. That's the smell and the burn in your stomach. Leave it in the dark long enough and it calms down. It turns sweet, and it turns into something you can take every day for sixty years.”

His mother aged garlic this way, the way her mother did back in Japan. She kept the cupboard going until she was 96.

“Your pipes get old before your face does, Gary. Young pipes stretch every time your heart beats. Old ones get stiff. Then the stairs get steep and your feet get cold.”

I went back to the condo and looked up the part I could check. It holds up better than I expected.

  1. Young blood vessels stretch. Every heartbeat, they give a little and spring back.
  2. With age they stiffen. Your heart works harder, and your hands and feet get less of the trip.
  3. Aging changes garlic. Months in the dark turn its harsh compounds into gentler ones, including S-allyl cysteine (SAC), and aged garlic extract has been studied for healthy circulation and how flexible vessels stay with age.1,2

Then I sent a photo of the cupboard to our daughter Megan. She's a pharmacist.

Megan

“Dad, garlic doesn't replace anything your doctor gives you. But aged garlic extract is one of the better-studied ones. If you try it, keep your prescriptions and tell your doctor.”

Coming from Megan, that's a rave review.

Mr. Okada's three rules

  • Aged, never raw“Brown and no smell, or it isn't ready.”
  • Two with breakfast, every day“The days you skip don't count.”
  • Climb something dailyStairs, a hill, the steps at church. His rules, not medical advice. If you take blood pressure medicine or a blood thinner, ask your doctor before adding garlic.

He doesn't age his own anymore. His granddaughter orders the softgels: garlic aged 20 months, with two partners his mother never had.

Garlic aged 20 months, plus CoQ10 and K2, two softgels with breakfast

Resilia Aged Odorless Garlic pouch over a sunny lanai table with coffee and amber softgels
  • 20 moaged garlic
  • 50 mgCoQ10
  • 180 mcgvitamin K2
  • 2softgels a day

Resilia Aged Odorless Garlic. Garlic aged 20 months and standardized for SAC, with CoQ10 as ubiquinol and vitamin K2 (MK-7), in one odorless softgel.

  • Aged garlic extract has been studied for healthy circulation and vessel flexibility with age.1,2
  • CoQ10 helps your cells make energy, and your body makes less of it as you age.3
  • Vitamin K2 helps send calcium where it belongs, and has been studied for vessel flexibility in older adults.4

Supports healthy circulation and healthy blood pressure already within normal range.* No garlic breath, no burps. The one honest catch is time. Most men give it a full month before the stairs feel different, and the ones who quit in week one never find out.

My first eight weeks

I ordered it from the condo that night. Two softgels with breakfast, then the stairs.

Week 1Week 2Week 4Week 8
Week 1

Nothing to notice yet

No garlic breath. Linda checked, twice.

Week 2

Warmer feet

Linda let my feet back on her side of the bed. That was the first thing I noticed.

Week 4

One stop instead of three

I stopped once on the 99 steps. Lighter ankles by dinner, and I stayed awake through the 3 o'clock news.

Week 8

Tyler only waited a minute

Mr. Okada still passed me. But I said “Morning” back, and I had the breath for it.

Five honest answers

Will I smell like garlic?

No. The 20-month aging takes the smell out, and the softgel leaves no aftertaste.

Can I take it with my medication?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you take a blood thinner or blood pressure medicine. Keep taking what you've been prescribed.

Should I stop my fish oil?

That's a call for you and your doctor. They work differently, and plenty of men take both.

Is it a subscription?

Yes. Refills ship every 30 days at the sale price, so you don't run out right before week 4. Stop or cancel anytime.

What if it doesn't work for me?

You're covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee. Contact Resilia for a full refund.

You can keep doing what I did: the fish oil, the raw garlic, the socks, the 3 p.m. energy drink. Or you can do what an 84-year-old man has done every morning for most of his life, and see what a month looks like.

You're not deciding whether it works. You're deciding whether to find out.

Why it isn't an $8 bottle

Store garlic pills are usually dried raw garlic, made in weeks. Mr. Okada's mother needed 20 months and a dark cupboard. I was spending $25 a month on fish oil and $30 on socks that only worked while I wore them.

Resilia on the 2-pouch pack: $30 a pouch, plus a free bamboo-lid glass jar. About a dollar a day.
